What is Chiropractic Manipulation?

Updated: 3 days ago

Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy (CMIT), or more commonly known as a chiropractic adjustment, can have several effects on the nervous system. The primary mechanism through which chiropractic adjustments influence the nervous system is by addressing segmental dysfunctions in the spine, commonly referred to as subluxations, although this term is being used less often as more understanding of the spine in and of itself is occurring via scientific research. Here’s how chiropractic adjustments impact the nervous system:

1. Improving Spinal Motion Integrity and Nerve Function

  • The spine houses the spinal cord, which is a vital part of the nervous system. Segments that have decreased movement patterns (subluxations or fixations) in the spine can put pressure on the nerves that exit the spinal cord, potentially leading to pain, discomfort, and impaired nerve function.

  • By adjusting the spine to restore proper movement patterns within a given segment or segments, chiropractors aim to reduce nerve compression, allowing the nerves to transmit signals more efficiently between the brain and the rest of the body.

2. Reducing Pain and Inflammation

  • Chiropractic adjustments can reduce pressure on nerves, which can alleviate pain. This is particularly important in conditions such as sciatica or herniated discs, where nerves are pinched or irritated.

  • The adjustment will also most likely stimulate the release of chemicals such as endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, which can help reduce inflammation and promote healing.

3. Modulating the Autonomic Nervous System

  • The autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls involuntary functions like heart rate, digestion, and breathing. Chiropractic adjustments may help balance the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) branches of the ANS, which would lead to better overall regulation of these systems; thus, decreasing symptoms and/or aiding in increasing functionality.

  • Many people experience a calming effect after chiropractic adjustments, which suggests that the parasympathetic system is being activated, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.

4. Enhancing Brain-Body Communication

  • Chiropractic care may improve the communication between the brain and the body by reducing interference in the nervous system caused by these spinal restrictions or fixations. Proper spinal function supports better coordination of motor functions, sensory perception, and overall body awareness.

  • Adjustments may improve proprioception (awareness of the body's position in space) and can have positive effects on balance and coordination.

5. Supporting the Immune System

  • Research has suggested that chiropractic adjustments may enhance immune function. Proper spinal movement patterns and postural control with decreased nerve interference, can improve the communication between the brain and immune cells, potentially increasing the body's ability to fight infections.

6. Regulating Hormones

  • By promoting balance in the nervous system and reducing stress responses, chiropractic adjustments can help regulate hormone levels. This can be particularly beneficial for conditions such as chronic stress, headaches, and other issues that may be exacerbated by hormonal imbalances.

7. Reducing Muscle Tension

  • The spine becomes fixated due to muscle tension and spasms. Chiropractic adjustments can help alleviate this tension, leading to improved posture and less strain on the nervous system.

In summary, chiropractic adjustments aim to optimize nervous system function by improving spinal segmental motion, increasing global movement patterns, aiding in proper posture, reducing nerve interference, and promoting overall health through better communication between the brain and body. This can lead to pain relief, improved mobility, reduced inflammation, and enhanced overall well-being.
